The Shift Every Growing Leader Has to Make

Getting stuck doesn’t always look like failure. Sometimes the shop is profitable. The team is busy. You’ve already proven that you can build something successful. But what worked to get you here may not be enough to take you where you want to go next.

Eric Thomas has built his career around motivation, but his message to shop owners goes much deeper than getting fired up. Motivation can get you moving. Growth requires discipline, execution, a strong culture, and a leader willing to keep changing too.

Because you can’t expect the business to reach another level while you stay exactly the same.

Being Busy Is Not the Same as Executing

Consistency sounds like a good thing, but Eric makes an important distinction: what are you consistently producing?

You can show up early, put in the hours, stay busy, and repeat the same activity every day. But if that activity isn’t creating the result you need, Eric calls that “rehearsed failure.”

Execution means more than effort. It means knowing the result you need, taking responsibility for producing it, and changing your approach when what you’re doing isn’t working.

The goal isn’t simply to keep doing more. It’s to get better at doing what actually moves the business forward.

Success Can Become the Thing That Keeps You Stuck

One of the easiest times to stop growing is when what you’re doing has already worked.

Eric describes it as becoming too attached to past success. You reach a level you once worked hard for, start believing you’ve “made it,” and keep relying on the same version of yourself that created those results.

But businesses change. Teams change. Markets change. Leadership has to change with them. Eric warns against spending too much time “trophy watching.” As he put it:

“Dust them off, but don’t stare at them.”

Celebrate the wins. Learn from them. Then get back to preparing for what comes next. Past success deserves to be recognized, but it can’t become the standard you keep trying to recreate forever.

Culture Has to Be Stronger Than Individual Heroics

Growth gets harder when too much of the business depends on the same few people.

Eric describes culture as the values and standards that shape the way a team operates and explains why those things have to be bigger than any one person.

When the culture is clear, people know what’s expected when they walk through the door. They know how the team works, how customers are served, and what standards they’re responsible for maintaining. This creates consistency by making those expectations shared across the team.

The strongest shops don’t rely on one person to be the hero. They build standards the whole team can carry.

Lead Yourself Before You Lead the Team

When asked what question leaders should ask themselves every week, Eric’s answer went straight to the top:

“Are you leading you, or are you just trying to lead other people?”

Owners ask their teams to improve all the time. Raise the standard. Be more accountable. Learn something new. Execute better. But the team is also watching the person asking them to change. If you want the business to grow, you have to be willing to challenge your own habits and thinking first.

The leader you’ve been got you to this point. The leader you become determines what happens next.
